Community Stories: Meet Oxana

A note from NHA: Oxana has been an invested community member since she arrived to live with us near the end of 2022, and has generously gifted us with many beautiful pieces of art - which you’ll see featured here instead of her photo (at her request)..

She was also featured in a local news article for her incredible talent —> you can read more about that here!

Oxana’s art is proudly displayed in staff offices, homes, and around the community hub!

Tell us a bit about yourself!

We came from Ukraine. I have specialization in several occupations. The main one is an art designer. Additionally, I used to work as a florist designer with international certificate. My son, before moving to Canada, was studying at an economical-trading college.

How did you find out about Norfolk Housing and why did you choose to live here?

We found out about Norfolk through RentFaster.ca - before that, we were trying to rent an apartment in various Calgary areas for 6 weeks. Norfolk caught our eye because of the creative interior in the lobby and the painted facade of the main building. We already knew that some artists must live here, making it a great fit for us.

Has living in a diverse, inclusive community had an impact on your life and if so, would you describe it?

Of course living in Norfolk has had a good impact on us. Firstly, they have a good policy of community administration towards to newcomers. When we just arrived to Canada, we didn't have much money to rent an apartment and Norfolk helped us a lot.

What’s one thing you wish people understood about housing?

The importance of location, especially for us as newcomers. Norfolk is close to the city centre, with easy access to variety of shops and café, but most importantly - transit. Also, the importance of good living conditions even when renting, knowing that someone will come fix things quickly, with good quality.

What is your favourite thing about living in this neighbourhood/community - and maybe a favourite spot nearby!?

The best place to visit is Princess Island Park. In spring and summer it is great spot to spend time with friends and family. The park is very clean and taken care of, a lot of flowers, perfect grass. In the park there are concert scenes, restaurants, a playground for children - it’s a convenient location for everybody who lives nearby. The embankment along the Bow river with sidewalks and bike lanes is also a good place to visit.

What’s your superpower!?

Self sufficiency, determination, critical thinking, fast adaptation in different environments, ambition, optimism :)
