Bryan Slauko - Chair
Tell us a bit about yourself! What's your day job, your interests, your life look like?
I am the co-founder and Managing Partner of a local venture capital investment fund and bring 25 years of experience in finance and investment management, business analysis and strategy to the Norfolk Board. I serve as a director on 5 corporate boards and have over 15 years experience serving on not-for-profit boards. I love being active in the outdoors, staying competitive in sports, and spending time with my wife and two amazing daughters.
Why did you choose to join the Board at NHA (and if relevant, your particular seat)? How long have you been with us?
I’ve been with Norfolk since 2012 and it was an opportunity to use my finance and real estate expertise to give back and make an impact in my community. Affordable and appropriate housing is an obvious challenge for Calgarians and the need is complex, so I wanted to use my skills and experience to find ways to help more people meet this basic need.
What is one thing you've learned about affordable housing since joining the Board?
The one thing that sticks out to me over the years is the array of different approaches and solutions to the affordable housing crisis. The housing spectrum demonstrates the complex need of our community and it is important to recognize that there is no one best solution. A healthy spectrum of housing that meets the complex needs of community members is so important. Housing sounds simple but for many people it is not just about income, and we all need more (than that) to thrive. We need community, support, diversity, and inclusion on top of affordability.
What's your favourite thing about NHA, or something you wish everyone knew?
My favourite thing about NHA is the people that I get to meet and connect with. The team, our community of residents, and the board. There is a sense of deep commitment to the good work and also we take time to have fun! I appreciate the diversity of perspectives on the board and it has been critical to have opportunity to hear from residents and their experiences.
The one thing I wish people knew and experience is Maya’s passion for Norfolk, the residents, and the sector. She brings her lived experience to the role and her passion for resident wellbeing is always evident.
What's a quote or sentiment you live by?
My gut says do the right thing, work hard, and have fun! Have and live with integrity. Do the right thing even when no one is watching.
Coffee or tea?
Tea!
