The Importance of Resident Engagement: How NHA Listens to Its Residents

A thriving community isn’t just about providing housing; it’s about creating a sense of belonging, security, and shared responsibility. At Norfolk we understand that to truly serve our residents, we must listen, learn, and act based on what we’re hearing. Resident engagement is an integral piece of how we uphold and implement our values on a day-to-day basis.

Gathering Resident Feedback

NHA employs a variety of methods to actively seek and incorporate resident feedback. These initiatives help the organization stay attuned to the evolving needs of the community and enhance the overall living experience.

  • Community Advisory Groups: These quarterly meetings provide residents with a direct avenue to staff and each other, which they can use to share concerns, offer suggestions, and engage in meaningful discussions about their community. By hosting these advisory groups on a regular basis, Norfolk fosters ongoing dialogue and builds trust and transparency with residents.

  • Resident Surveys: Surveys play a crucial role in measuring resident wellbeing and assessing the impact of Norfolk Housing’s services. By collecting direct feedback, the organization gains insights into areas needing improvement, allowing for data-driven decision-making that enhances the quality of life for residents.

  • Comprehensive Resident Wellness Study: Recognizing the importance of holistic wellbeing, Norfolk Housing conducted a thorough study on resident wellness in 2023. The findings from this research led to the hiring of a dedicated professional to implement key recommendations, ensuring long-term support and improved resources for tenants.

  • Open Door Policy: With regular office hours, a shared community hub, and an investment in relationships between staff and residents, NHA works to create a relationship with residents where they feel enabled to voice their opinions in real-time, discuss pressing community issues, and collaborate on solutions.

Turning Feedback Into Action

Listening is the first step, but NHA also takes meaningful action based on resident input to continuously improve our services and foster a better living environment.

  • Securing Grants for Beautification and Community-Building: Resident feedback has directly influenced initiatives such as securing grants to improve communal spaces, enhance landscaping and gardening, and create areas for social connection. These projects contribute to a more vibrant and welcoming community atmosphere.

  • Personalized Approach to Difficult Situations: Every resident has unique circumstances, and Norfolk takes an individualized approach to support those facing challenges. Whether it’s financial hardships, personal struggles, or conflicts within the community, we work closely with residents to find compassionate and effective solutions whenever possible.

  • Community Hub & Events: Many of our residents choose to make their home with NHA specifically because they want to be in an intentional, engaged community. Through a combination of spaces and specific events, we work with residents to identify the activities and opportunities to get together and share interests as well as meaningful dialogue.

  • Calgary Dollars Partnership: Everyone has a skill to share, and a support to offer. By partnering with Calgary Dollars, we’re encouraging residents to find theirs – and to use their Calgary Dollars earnings to pay a portion of their rent! By engaging with one another and the organization, residents have more opportunities to supplement their income and make great connections.

A Commitment to Continuous Improvement

Resident engagement is not a one-time initiative - it’s an ongoing commitment. By fostering open communication, investing in community-driven improvements, and taking a responsive approach to resident needs, Norfolk Housing ensures that its residents are not just tenants but active participants in shaping their home environment.

By prioritizing engagement and responsiveness, we set a strong example of how housing organizations can build thriving, inclusive communities where residents feel respected and supported. The commitment to listening and acting on feedback underscores the belief that housing is more than just shelter—it’s about creating a place where people truly belong.
