Eric Beaton - Treasurer
Tell us a bit about yourself! What's your day job, your interests, your life look like?
I am a CPA and Partner in a Calgary-based accounting firm where I provide advice on tax, accounting and financial matters to clients, including those with real estate holdings, and in property management and development. My wife and I have a young daughter and in our free time we enjoy reading, travelling to warmer places, and swimming.
Why did you choose to join the Board at NHA (and if relevant, your particular seat)? How long have you been with us?
When younger I moved around quite a bit, and learned to appreciate how important a sense of community is to one’s wellbeing. Since moving to Calgary in 2013, I decided I wanted to give back and help others feel at home. The Treasurer role is an excellent way for me to use my expertise towards this goal.
What is one thing you've learned about affordable housing since joining the Board?
I learned how many excellent not-for-profit organizations there are filling a variety of gaps in Calgary’s affordable housing situation. Seeing Norfolk work alongside organizations like Highbanks Society, Accessible Housing, and many others opened my eyes to how effective non-governmental organizations can be when tackling the nuanced problem of housing.
What's your favourite thing about NHA, or something you wish everyone knew?
I really like the 50/50 model used. To me, this elevates the sense of community.
What's a quote or sentiment you live by?
On the theme of community - “Joy multiplies when it is shared, but grief diminishes with every division.”
Coffee or tea?
Both, variety is the spice of life!
