Gerald Wheatley - Secretary
Tell us a bit about yourself! What's your day job, your interests, your life look like?
I work at a Calgary community agency called the Arusha Centre that has programs for community economic development, grassroots granting, and environmental action.
Why did you choose to join the Board at NHA (and if relevant, your particular seat)? How long have you been with us?
I live in Sunnyside and I joined the board in the Fall of 2016 after many years of appreciating the design of Norfolk Housing and watching the cost of housing go up. Norfolk has changed the rules, both by being an example of how to improve the landlord/tenant relationship and doing so while keeping housing costs down.
What is one thing you've learned about affordable housing since joining the Board?
I've learned that when our neighbours have good quality, affordable housing, Sunnyside is more stable and relationships are deeper. I've also learned that living in our neighbourhood often saves us money on transportation, saves us time in managing our home, and makes us more climate-friendly by reducing our carbon footprint.
What's your favourite thing about NHA, or something you wish everyone knew?
Norfolk is a successful nonprofit that shows housing doesn't have to be based on private ownership, real estate speculation, or exploitative relationships. It's helping keep Sunnyside affordable and building our community.
What's a quote or sentiment you live by?
We can complain about any problems we like, but if we do, it obligates us to be part of the solution.
Coffee or tea?
A coffee break is when I'm not drinking coffee.
