Roland Walters - Vice Chair
Tell us a bit about yourself! What's your day job, your interests, your life look like?
I am a senior business leader with 18+ years of experience in corporate finance, treasury, corporate strategy, corporate development, business transformation and profitability management.
Over the course of my career, I have led teams in establishing analytical decision-making and innovative thinking. My passion lies in cross-functional team leadership, financial due diligence and capital management. Building consensus between stakeholders is one of my strong suits.
Outside of the office, I am a family man and exercise enthusiast. I am passionate about people and advocating for diverse perspectives!
I live in Calgary with my wife and daughter. You can most likely find me spending time with family or ascending a mountain in the backcountry.
Why did you choose to join the Board at NHA (and if relevant, your particular seat)? How long have you been with us?
It was an opportunity to create sustainable change in affordable housing - in my own backyard. Our collaborative community model is second to none. It is an honour to serve as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors at Norfolk. I joined Norfolk in 2018.
What is one thing you've learned about affordable housing since joining the Board?
When affordable housing is structured correctly, it feels like a warm community… and that community can boost individual well-being in ways that are unquantifiable. It is one of the many reasons that I appreciate our business model.
What's your favourite thing about NHA, or something you wish everyone knew?
The people. I have had conversations with many of our residents and they are among some of the nicest people that I have ever met. Very inclusive. People make all the difference.
What's a quote or sentiment you live by?
Having a diversity of perspectives helps us ask the right questions and challenge the status-quo in a thoughtful way. Diverse perspectives lead to good decision-making.
Coffee or tea?
Tea.
